Football's Greatest DVD Box Set

The DVD series that shares a title with us, this series, produced by Sky includes 24 half hour documentaries on the greatest players of all time, with an uncanny similarity to our own Legends page, It also features a programme on the next best 25 players and a longer special on the number 1 (guess who!). Professionally produced with interviews with heaps of football legends and lots of great footage of the players in action.

Inverting the Pyramid by Jonathan Wilson

One of the best football books ever written. Sports writer for the Guardian Jonathan Wilson explains how tactics have evolved from the Victorian age to the present. But the book is so much more than that, touching upon the unique cultures from every era and country it explains how the game has developed as it has in each country (from the public schools of England to the coffee shops of Vienna, and from the barrios of Buenos Aires to Barcelona's La Masia and much more between).

Football Fever DVD

The packaging might look a bit cheap but this is a very good compendium of all the best goals and moments from past World Cups (up to 2010). Great fun to watch, put it on and put your feet up.
The Football Men by Simon Kuper

An excellent book, Anglo/Dutch author Kuper profiles many great players and managers from the last 30 years. He manages to get to the essence of each one, in relatively short chapters, explaining what is great about them and also making them very human. Very readable and enjoyable.
World Cup Official Films

The official World Cup films are much more than highlights collections, although they do provide that as well. Made with the production values of cinema releases they tell the story of each World Cup, on and off the pitch and capturing both the country and the era each was made. Available for all World Cups between 1930 and 2006, now in a comprehensive box set. Re-live all the classics of the past whenever you want.
The Football Book

This attractively packaged coffee table book has it all  - clubs, great players, tactics, coaching. It provides a great summary of the game across the world - with club rivalries, legendary players and the great stadiums all included and nicely illustrated. The part I like the best is the illustrated double-page spread of each World Cup Final. Recently revised ahead of the 2014 World Cup this offers hours of browsing enjoyment.
History of Football: The Beautiful Game - DVD Box Set

This 2002 series rather escaped notice when it was released but it is an excellent documentary telling the story of the game from its origins to the modern day, with separate programmes on football in Europe, South America, Africa for both club and country, and much more as well. In so doing the programme tracks down an amazing amount of legends from every era. This will be an invaluable resource - tracking down great players from the early World Cups, several of whom have now passed away. There is some great quotes from Maradona in new interviews too! Extras include highlights from some classic games
The Perfect 10 by Richard Williams

Subtitled "Dreamers, schemers, playmakers and playboys: the men who wore football's magic number" this great read provides ten biographies/appreciations of ten of football's greatest playmakers: Platini, Pele, Maradona, Rivera, Puskas, Zidane to name a few. Each one reads like a mini novel, beautifully describing the players' time and place to understand their story and what made them so great.

Boys from Brazil:
The Official History of the Brazil World Cup Team

This great documentary, produced by the BBC and narrated by John Motson, tells the story of the Brazil team from 1930 to 1986. It is very well made and is of course a great story but the best thing about it is the opportunity to marvel at all these great teams, especially Pele and co in the 1970 team in full colour. If it was updated to show the 1998 and 2002 teams too it would be even better.
