The second generation of great Dutch players. Rinus Michels returned but the team played with rather more conservative style that in the 1970s. Nevertheless Gullit and van Basten remain one of the greatest strike partnerships we have seen and were soon to move to AC Milan, along with defender/midfielder Rijkaard. Koeman was the other star - a free kick master, hard-man and sweeper - he was to join Barcelona's dream team. This may not be the Netherlands' best ever team but it remains the only one to win an international trophy.
