The Heysel tragedy made Juventus' 1985 European Cup win rather a hollow victory but this should not detract from the great team that was assembled here. The Italian club had reached the final two years earlier and were pioneering a return to greatness for southern European clubs who had not won the Cup since 1969. Playing a traditional Italian sweeper system the side had a great defence and contained the core of the Italy side that won the 1982 World Cup, but it was the Frenchman Platini, and the Pole Boniek, that added the attacking flair and touch of genius.
